About the Society

Dedicated to Pulmonary Health Across Libya

The Libyan Thoracic Society is a professional scientific association, established by Decision No. (179) of 2019 of the Libyan Authority for Scientific Research. It brings together consultants, specialists and chest physicians working across hospitals and medical centres throughout Libya, along with others committed to advancing healthcare.

Since its founding, LTS has organised annual conferences, workshops, and scientific days, and contributed to national protocols including the COVID-19 advisory committee, the coronavirus treatment protocol, and the national tuberculosis treatment protocol.

The Society works to advance medical practice in the field of chest and respiratory diseases by organising conferences, symposia, workshops and continuing education programmes, encouraging scientific research, and strengthening cooperation between health institutions and scientific bodies locally and internationally — contributing to better quality of care for patients with thoracic diseases in Libya.

From a founding group of specialists to a nationwide professional society in six years.

Our Mission

Advancing the management of thoracic diseases in our community in order to raise standards of health overall.

Society Goals

  • Developing scientific research and clinical practice in thoracic diseases
  • Training and qualifying young medical professionals
  • Organising local and international conferences and workshops
  • Enhancing cooperation with regional and international scientific societies
  • Raising community awareness about prevention of respiratory diseases and smoking
  • Working with the Medical Specializations Council and medical schools to improve curricula and training
  • Working with the Ministry of Health to develop diagnostic and therapeutic services
2019

The Libyan Thoracic Society is founded as an independent, non-profit scientific body, recognised by the Libyan Ministry of Health and registered with the National Authority for Scientific Research.

2020

LTS contributes to the national COVID-19 response, participating in the advisory committee for pandemic management and co-authoring the national COVID-19 treatment protocol.

2021

The Society organises its first annual scientific conference and begins developing national treatment protocols for tuberculosis in collaboration with the Ministry of Health.

2022

LTS expands its regional presence, appointing representatives for the western, central, and eastern regions to coordinate workshops and training across Libya.

2023

The Society hosts its fourth annual conference and launches a continuing medical education programme focused on respiratory disease diagnosis and management.

2024

LTS strengthens international partnerships and begins collaborating with regional scientific societies to develop joint training and fellowship opportunities.

2025

The 6th Annual Scientific Conference is planned for Tripoli, bringing together pulmonologists, thoracic surgeons, and intensive care specialists from across Libya and the region.

Membership Criteria

What is required to join the Libyan Thoracic Society.

  1. Complete the registration form in full, with implicit consent to the Society retaining your personal information in its archive and records

  2. Uphold professionalism, medical ethics and good standing, and respect fellow members of the Society

  3. Members need not be physicians, but must belong to a medical or allied-health profession, or to a university faculty in those specialties

  4. Pay membership fees in full and on schedule
